ABOUT

While many artists strive for their creativity to propel them to a high level of greatness, only a small number are able to actually achieve that goal. Within that small number of creative minds, an even smaller number use their own greatness to help the lives of others. For the Massachusetts based singer/songwriter Shannon Grant, greatness can only be achieved after positively affecting and enlightening the lives of others via her art. With musical influences from her family, coupled with a childhood background in music and dance, Shannon knew that she wanted to be a performer from an early age. Now she plans to be the difference within a genre where many artists struggle to find their own sound, creative individuality, and personal freedom.

Within Rock music and various other genres, some artists follow creative blueprints laid down by their favorite artists, while others simply draw inspiration and maintain their originality. Before Shannon’s involvement in music, she was influenced by a number of her favorite artists from the past, while studying a number of new artists who are currently active today. Some of these musical influences include Johnny Cash, Whitney Houston, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, 70s rock band Heart, Lana Del Rey, and pop group Marina & the Diamonds. These artists, as well as many more, have helped Shannon Grant mold her current sound within today’s Rock music.

Besides some of her favorite musicians, Shannon also draws inspiration from a number of close people, memorable dreams, and important personal events. “My grandmother always inspired me to keep going with music,” explains Shannon. “Along with other family members who are still alive, I was also inspired by the family and friends that I’ve lost along the way.” Just like her friends and family who are alive and pushing her to succeed, her friends and family who have died also inspire her to continue pushing forward. In their honor, Shannon attributes all of her musical progress and accomplishments to the souls of those people.

Similar to most artists working toward achieving their dreams, Shannon was passionate about music and wanting to be a performer from an early age. “When I was about 3 years old, I told my mother that I wanted to sing,” shares Shannon. “I used to dance on top of one of those old school televisions and perform for people.” Unfortunately, no one was willing to work with the young talent until she was about 6 years old. This is when she met the first voice teacher who would help mold her into the powerhouse that she is today. Through consistent practice and vocal training for almost 20 years, Shannon finally began to find her voice and identity as an artist.

Along with vocal lessons, Shannon also has a strong dance background in the realm of tap, jazz dance, and a few other styles with her favorite being ballet. “While taking singing and dance lessons, I also did cheerleading in high school to keep active with my peers.” With such a strong performance background, it makes sense that Shannon was always used to being in the spotlight. She gained experience performing solo (and with a band) at a number of independent competitions, school musicals, fundraisers and telethons, town fairs, etc. These performances eventually led Shannon to perform at a number of notable venues such as the Hard Rock Café in Boston. All of the experience gained by Shannon has helped to establish the core fan base that her music actively caters to today.

While fame and fortune via creativity is something many artists would like to achieve, most creative minds find comfort in effectively creating works that they are passionate about. Some artists use their creativity as therapy, emotional expression, tools for education, etc. In Shannon Grant’s case, she uses her music as a means of personal freedom for herself and as a tool to enlighten for her audience. “I do music because I get to be myself,” says Shannon. “I’m a shy person when interacting with people, but when I get to perform on stage, my true identity shines. Performing is my way of finding freedom.” While also allowing herself to be free, Shannon aims for her music to show fans alternative perspectives about traditional topics. With her dark and edgy approach to Rock music, fans everywhere will understand Shannon’s personal expression as it pertains to everyday issues and events that people deal with.

Currently in the studio with Massachusetts based Surefire Music Group (Ne-Yo, Jordan Knight, Brooke Hogan, Boston Symphony Orchestra, VH1, and MTV), Shannon is finishing up her debut (untitled) project, which is scheduled to drop in 2014. In late 2013, she will also be releasing the video for her first single entitled “Bad Dream,” which is about a burdening relationship that is comparable to an inescapable nightmare.
