About
Our band is in the groove rock/jamband/funk genre, but we have little touch of a lot of other influences, including reggae, blues, R&B (both old and new), acid jazz, and classic rock. The only thing we are not is metal or country.
We've been playing gigs around the Philly area for about 5 years. We have a few dozen originals and a similar number of covers. We are pretty serious about the band, but we all have jobs (and some have kids), so we won't be doing much in the way of touring. We like playing out a few times a month, practicing weekly, doing some studio recording, and having a good time at practice. Many of our gigs are 3-4 hour shows at venues we know well. We're in our early 30's.
We are looking for a bassist who can commit to a regular weekly practice, who can pick up songs quickly, and who loves to improvise. Our last bassist left because his wife had a baby and he didn't have time any more.
We practice in Oaklyn, NJ, which is just across the Walt Whitman bridge, 10 minutes from Center City.
NOTE: Please contact us through myspace.com/beatnikbrown, not through BandMix email.
Influences
A wide range of influences.
We like stuff by Phish, Jack Johnson, Medeski Martin & Wood, Greyboy Allstars, and the Meters.
We cover songs by those bands plus Toots & the Maytalls, Eminem, Jimi Hendrix, Parliament, G Love, Neil Young, Sublime, CCR, Grateful Dead, Jackson 5, Beastie Boys, Notorious BIG, Cake, Stevie Wonder, Prince, ZZ Top, James Brown, Young MC, Rolling Stones, Bill Withers, Beck, Nina Simone, and others.
You don't have to like or even know all those influences, as long as you have broad tastes and like to groove.
Equipment List
We have all the gear to run a show in a moderately sized venue.
Bassist should provide head and cabinet.
