Sound Comparisons:
If the Cure and the Magnetic Fields paired up and had children, but due to their promiscuity (i.e., love affair with the B52's) weren't sure if the father was Yoko Ono, the Breeders, or Joy Division, this would describe their child, our band.

Equipment List:

Larrivée OMV-03 Acoustic Guitar:
An industry second, Rob Beloved purchased his guitar at the famous headquarters of Larrivée in Canada. He slept in his Toyota Tercel to avoid hotel costs when he learned his 2nd would not be ready that night. Larrivée is well known and respected in the music industry, as you can see. The guitar itself is labeled a '2nd' because some glue is showing on the seam. It is not noticable visually or acoustically, and certainly the reduced cost justified the stigma. This Larrivée is known as an 'electric acoustic' because it contains a polarity switch and tone knob which allows volume, mid-range, and high-range adjustments. Thus the sound possiblities are numerous. Rob uses 12-gauge Dean Markley strings. Eleni Binge also makes use of this 2nd and uses .73 MM nylon pics for faster strumming action. The Buffet does not use this guitar because playing it has a tendancy to make your hands look like you were in a coal mine (note: which might be solved by cleaning the strings! --Buffet).
Custom Telecaster/Stratocaster:
Used on newer material primarily, but found on this album on the song "Neither," this electric guitar has been in Rob's hands since 1997 when he traded his Jackson in. He is embarrased about the Jackson part. The guitar has a unique sound due to the three different pickups - one double humbucker and two single coil. This is the perfect guitar for those who desire a higher-quality clean sound as well as the flexibility to thrash when needed. Rob uses D'Addario 10 gauge strings currently, a switch from the 12's he used previously. The 12's made solos more difficult but created a fuller sound. Since the Larrivée acoustic has a full sound, the electric need not take on this burden and can be used for our punkier rockified songs. See it in action on our shows page.

Fender Blues Junior Amplifier:
Used with both the Larrivée and the Tele/Strat, the Blues Junior is a relief after pushing around a Marshall Stack for years. The Blues Junior tube amp has more than enough power to make your audience lose partial hearing (if desired) due to its built in 'Fat Switch' which increases the preamp gain providing extra distortion and sustain. The warm sound quality meets or exceeds that of larger amps. You might already know that George Harrison used this amp during his stint with the Beatles. The amp is also used by Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones.

Custom Garcia Trap Kit and the rest of the "Mutt Kit" setup:

Garcia stuff:

Eleni Binge switched up from her $300 nameless kit to a custom Garcia kit. Jerry Garcia (not the one you are thinking of - poor fellow must have to deal with this confusion every day) is famous around Seattle for his custom drums. He also is a teacher and has given drum lessons to students such as Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters (and formerly Nirvana if this need be said). Buy from Jerry! He is approachable and very knowlegable. The bass drum and rack tom were made by Jerry out of maple. Ms. Binge also has a floor tom and another rack tom made by Jerry but has pared down her kit and uses the 13" x 12" rack tom for the deep tom sound. She was inspired by Ron Carnell (formerly of the Ottoman Bigwigs and Sycophant) who makes a few pieces sound like Neil Peart's kit.

The Mutt stuff:

Tama Snare - The snare was purchased separately and is quite small (12") with a metal rim. Ms. Binge prefers this snare to her maple Dunnett snare purchased at Trading Musician due to the snappier sound quality.

Percussion - Also used as a tom is a Djembe made by Remo with 'Fiber' skin (i.e., not dead animal skin). The djembe sits on a snare stand because Ms. Binge needs to buy a proper djembe stand that will not cause it to fall over during particularly lively drumrolls. The LP wood block is mounted upon the bass drum and makes quite a nice alternative to the cowbell. Mounted on her high-hat stand is a Rhythm Tech 'drum set tambourine.'

Cymbals - Ms. Binge uses all Ziljian cymbals. Currently she uses a 20" ping ride and 14" thin crash purchased at Garcia's Seattle Drum Shop. Her 14" high-hat was purchased at the famous Donn Bennett drum shop and has a light, sleek ting to it.

Hardware:The old Pearl high-hat stand was purchased at American Music in 1993. The Camco kick pedal was purchased upon recommendation of a kind staff member at Trading Musician (she was right - it does hold up through many abuses - including The Buffet's drum playing).

Sticks:Too many sticks to mention, mostly 5B's. For those quieter moments Ms. Binge favors a Vater Whip (they don't splinter off and break like the Hot Rods, thus eliminating the chance of a piece lodging itself in the eye of another BB member).

Other Mutts:

Rob Beloved plays the kit on the current album for 'Why Vegan.' He also plays the drums on new material not featured on this album - 5 songs total. He cannot keep a beat unless he is wearing shoes. The Buffet plays the drums on one song as well not yet featured on an album. His drumming style might be classified as 'jazz punk.'

Fretless Bass:
The Buffet plays a fretless Warwick Corvette Standard. It has a Bubinga body, Ovangkol neck, and passive pick-ups. The wood of this instrument is very dense and naturally produces a smooth thick sound. This bass was selected because of its potential to emit an infinite amount of weird sounds, heavy duty German craftsmanship, and playability.

Papoose:
The Papoose is a unique instrument manufactured by Tacoma Guitars located about 40 miles south of Seattle. The Papoose is a six string instrument that utilizes a standard tuning in A. It is 19.1" scale length, solid Western Cedar top, solid Mahogany back and sides, slim profile one piece Mahogany neck, Rosewood bridge and 21-fret fingerboard. It has sort of a guitar/mandolin/ukulele sound to it. This instrument was originally purchased as a high quality travel guitar and has been an excellent tool on the stage and in the studio. The Papoose is the featured instrument in the song "Billy" on Beloved Binge's debut album - click here to go to check out samples.

Bass Amp:
Also stay tuned for information about the bass amp.

The Unmentionables:
A Yamaha keyboard might be used in two songs only. But not on this album. One key feature of this keyboard is its ability to play 'La Vida Loca' at the push of a button. There are also notable 'DJ' features.

Members Of Band:

Personal:
Not too personal. Rob Beloved works at the famous Gurian Instruments founded by Michael Gurian. Mr. Gurian began his career building guitars and has made guitars for musicians such as Paul Simon and Bob Dylan. He was also responsible for building many guitar-making tools that are in use by guitar builders today. Books have been written by his students. Check out Guitarmaking: Tradition and Technology by W. Cumpiano and J. Natelson and Steel String Guitar Construction by I. Sloane.
Mr. Beloved has been building guitar parts for over four years at Gurian. He got his first guitar when he was eleven years old - a 'frankenstein' guitar made with pieces of different guitars. Rob Beloved has performed in several rock bands as a guitarist/songwriter on both coasts. In his spare time, Mr. Beloved enjoys practicing Aikido, which he has been studying since 18.

The Buffet has been playing guitar, piano, and bass for years. He also was in several different choirs in addition to being in a series of rock bands. Currently, The Buffet works as an Employment Specialist for people with disabilities.

Eleni Binge loves the drums. She once cried after 5 years of piano lessons which was a successful tactic for not making it 6. She grew up in a household of classical musicians. Her grandfather and great-grandfather were in the Seattle Symphony, her grandmother played cello, and her mother played and currently plays 1st violin in the Philharmonia Northwest orchestra and Northwest String Quartet.
Ms. Binge also plays guitar. Currently she works as a Legal Advocate. She is a mentor in the "Beyond the Binge" program. She is also working on a documentary entitled 'Seeing Through the Fence' scheduled for release in 2005 and editing her father's biography "Tales of a Greek Father."
