I have been playing music (various instruments) for over 30 years. I started playing as a Freshman in high school. Starting in Heavy Metal, as most of us did at the time, I quickly gravitated to more technically difficult Progressive Rock. My prime influences of the time were Rush, Kansas, & Yes. I then heard of a guitarist named Al DiMeola. Hearing him, I found the epitome of precision and speed. Shortly after I was asked, by a friend, to form a Country band. I loathed Country music. Another friend, a guitar “mentor”, introduced me to Albert Lee. This changed my world. Upon hearing Albert Lee, I changed my mind about Country music and decided to give it a go. I quit my Progressive Rock trio, where we covered Rush, Kansas, & Yes (Pretty effectively too) and joined with a local band called “Murphy’s Law” (They now go by the name “The Bogatones”) and proceeded to hone my Country “chicken-picking” skills.
I left that band because I wanted to pursue a music degree. I started college at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. I became friends with a drummer and we decided to form a Contemporary Christian band together. We would be led to a semi national artist named Jackie Weaver. His stage name was Jackson Lee. We auditioned for him and his manager, Olga Walker. I won the position of lead guitarist because I played with enthusiasm, restraint, and feel for the song. I was cutting edge in the technique I used. They owned a working recording studio where I was the staff lead guitarist. In the time I played there, I logged hundreds of studio hours; playing Country, Jazz, Pop, Blues, Southern Rock, and Gospel for various artists who would use the recording studio. I left that band and moved to Ocala, FL to continue my education in music production and composition arranging. I played with several “pickup” bands there including a few Jazz Fusion projects. After moving back to Tennessee, I played with Jackie again, for awhile, but due to managerial distress, I left the studio and that band. After a few years of getting married, having a family, and earning a degree, I decided to seriously pursue music again. I joined several Blues bands in the Chattanooga area. In 2000, I moved my family to Cincinnati, OH for a career move. I quickly entered the local music scene and rode to the top of the local musician status. I longed for a Country band to play with. My search was over when I found a band that was searching for a “hot-picking” lead guitarist. I have been playing with the same guys for a bout 2 years. I decided, from the insistence of others, to move to Nashville and pursue a career in music.
