A few years after beginning a promising classical voice career most recently under world-renowned soprano Harolyn Blackwell at the Peabody Conservatory, Kate O’Connor has branched from classical to pursue her love of alternative pop music.

She began her career at the age of fourteen with a talent show performance that slapped her with her true calling, from where she began singing church music under Dr. Daniel Perkins of Plymouth State University, who would become her voice teacher and mentor. Later, she toured New England with the PSU Chamber Singers as one of the youngest members in their history, where she was introduced to various styles including African and Mongolian music and a cappella. She won the New Hampshire NATS Competition and liberated her dramatic side through musical theatre, twelve productions in all, including the role of Sarah Brown in "Guys and Dolls" and Friedrich in "The Sound of Music."

As her voice and her vinyl collection developed, she decided to piece the two together and began writing her own material and collaborating with like-minded Conservatory students, resulting in the studio electronica group Baby’s Bootie (www.purevolume.com/babysbootie). With a voice that skilfully snaps between jazz and punk and a knack for writing intelligent lyrics, her style is a bipolar combination of sweet and hardcore, inspired by groups such as Mindless Self Indulgence, Smashing Pumpkins, Genesis, Heart, The Police, and Elvis Costello, which all began with a dumpster-dive salvation of a Rage Against the Machine album in her early teens that ignited her love for alternative. Her sound is sultry and her glittery and aggressive performances encourage the audience to dance. Teamed with bass, kit, and synthesizer, O’Connor hopes to form a cohesive group with intelligent lyrics and exploratory sound.
