About
What is Circus Asylum? From the first note the Circus explodes with a fist pumping, head banging energy unseen since the days of KISS .
From the Power packed choruses, rhythmic riff driven verses, thunderous guitar harmonies, hard driving bass riffs, and rouge drums, topped off with bursting, writhingfemale vocals-- oh yeah and a crazy fu*ked up place where psycho clowns drive tiny cars full of blood struggling to escape the horrors one finds in the dank depths of the Asylum--That is the essence of Circus Asylum striving to reintroduce the glory days of rock n' roll when concerts were a visual experience of flames and flying guitars.
The Chronicling of Circus Asylum began with brothers TJ (Guitar) and Nick (Drums), who from an early age began practicing their art with dreams of one day ruling the limelight. When they felt ready they sought out a singer. They soon found one who knew another young musician, Kody (Bass). Their first set list consisted of cover songs such as Guns N' Roses “Sweet Child of Mine” and Rush's “Limelight”. After a few shows, however, their first singer left the band. With only a short list of covers and nowhere to turn, the trio sought a new singer through a local newspaper, which simply stated “Singer Wanted”, and of course the obligatory phone number. After a few Idol-esque (William Hung not Kelly Clarkson) try outs, a young woman clad in a hoody, baggy & ripped jeans, and a smirk, zipped up the drive way on a blue moped. She chose the first song in her audition “Enter Sandman” by Metallica, and ripped the guys a new one with her rising power and perfect pitch. She fired another shot to the frontal lobe with her dulcet tones and another spectacular show of force with Guns N' Roses' “Sweet Child of Mine”. One short unanimous vote later, Courtney was added and thusly Circus Asylum was born.
It became Circus's philosophy at every new venue to bust down the doors and rock the place to the ground whenever they entered a club,no matter the size of the audience. It became the “5 or 5000” rule. They continued to gig, but felt something was missing. TJ brought his co-worker into the garage to jam with the band and Zach (guitar) joined The Circus the next week. Circus Asylum wrote their first Original Song “The Edge” to express and commemorate the power of the adrenaline rush one gets standing in the spot light. From there they wrote about the most powerful experiences their young lives had allotted them. Circus met West Michigan locals turned heroes Pop Evil who mentored the young musicians and passed on a great deal of knowledge, from music to business. Soon enough the band found their way into enough venues to begin making a name for themselves, and began playing with acts such as Taproot, Framing Hanley, Smile Empty Soul, Joan Red, Tattooed Millionaires, Sore Eyes, Track Fighter and Pop Evil several times. In the summer of ‘09 their accolades had grown to the point that they were able to book a tour across the country beginning with the CD release of Circus Asylum's self titled demo at their home venue of Planet Rock. From there, they hit Chicago, St. Louis, El Reno (Oklahoma), all the way to Los Angeles, where they played 5 nights, one of which was the world famous “ Whisky a Go-Go ”, which throughout the years has given rise to such bands as Van Halen, Motley Crue, and Guns 'n' Roses. For their performance at the “Whisky” they received rave reviews in “Sugarbuzz Magazine ” a magazine devoted entirely to the L.A. music scene. The return trip was also action packed, with shows in Las Vegas, El Reno, Louisville, Cambridge (Ohio), and then home to Planet Rock. Since the tour, doors continue to open for Circus Asylum, whether it's new venues, studio opportunities, or great shows with great bands.
