As a toddler I spent most of my time hunting for pots and pans to bang and clank, and my favorite leisure time was spent in a rocking chair totally absorbed by the rhythm of movement. The first time I heard Latin Folk music on the radio I could only laugh. This stuff was so bizarre and unnatural, but totally motivating. The rhythms of latin music move you like no other. In elementary school I joined the band starting on the saxophone....but all the
cool kids were playing drums. By junior high I had made the switch to percussion and began performing with the orchestra, minus strings. (small town...smaller budget).
From there I took drum kit lessons from Terry Young who said to my Mom “Your kid’s a drummer”, which has since predicted my fate. With high school came fellow musicians and various collective efforts. My first real rock show was held in Penfield NY and entitled “Livestock ‘94” where the bands performed in the Barn. With college came a limbo that wouldn’t shake. “What do I do?” “What direction should I go?” These questions were answered by a call from the music director of a Circus based in San Juan Puerto Rico. I took the gig without any doubts. 12 shows a week...who wouldn’t?
And there resurfaced my love for latin american music.
The blending of afro-cuban polyrhythms and the sensations of screaming brass. Now back in the states I have discovered that music don’t pay no bills and having some stability is wonderful. So here I go with Day Job in one hand and Gigs in the other.

Influences:

I grew up listening to Primus, then Janes addiction, then Chili peppers, but right now my play list is full of Michel Camilo, Tool, and Peter
gabriel. Sting gets a guest spot in my mix if he behaves.

Equipment List:

Vintage 1969 Ludwig champagne sparkle. (sounds like crap, but love the look :)
Gretsch catalina birch 5 piece (never had a better studio rig)
Yamaha stage custom (great live rig)
My cymbal collection: New Beat Hats, 21" Sabian HH rock ride: 21" Zildjian sweet ride 13" Sabian aa fusion hats: 14" hh thin crash: 16" HHX evolution crash (Dave de man): 10" Sabian splash: 16"
Wuhan cina, (I'm dying to get another 18")
and a whole buncha hardware and crap to hold it all up.
Audio: I usually run all other instruments and a vocal mix directly into my own sound board and use Shure E2 head phones for my own picky little mix. ( and a lot less frustration dealing with
sound men) not to mention not going deaf.
