Vocalist - General, Bass Guitar, Drums, Other, Banjo, Steel guitar, Upright bass.
I am forming a band called DBand in Somerset County New Jersey featuring accordion, bass, and drums to play Americana, Country and Polka Music. Steel Guitar and/or Banjo may also be used for large venues. Gigs may include weddings, fraternal clubs or senior events.
Through the years I played accordion either as a soloist or side man with several bands. I began in high school with a five piece standards and pops band from Pennsylvania. This was a family band consisting of mother (rhythm guitar and vocals), two sons (lead guitar and drums), US Army Band veteran (saxophone), and me (accordion). The band leader and lead guitarist Carroll Hooks later formed a rock band with his brother Chet. Calling the band Scarlet Pumpernickel, they made a couple of recordings. I can't find these, but if you do, please let me know.
later I formed the Dave Burr country music trio in Illinois with bassist Bob Edwards, a Jim Reeves sound-alike singer. My drummer, Dr. Stuart S. Smith, is now Professor of Music and Director of the New Music Ensemble at the University of Maryland Baltimore Campus, UMBC.
My other drummer, Mark Swanson, is currently percussionist with the Chicago IL band "Bunch of Coconuts". Mark has performed with Sammy Davis Jr., Vic Damone, Henry Mancini, Liberace and others. He also owns a sheet music publishing company Media Press Inc.: www.mediapressinc.com
Listeners often get up and dance to the stimulating upbeat music I provide. I could also be found playing tuba in a marching band or singing in a church choir. Two were professional bands, the Kittaning PA Firemans Band, and the East Hanover NJ American Weldery Band. In high school I sang baritone in District Chorus.
In college at Lancaster PA I once performed with Sing Out America for a crowd of 20,000. I played accordion in the college band where I read from oboe scores. The bandmaster, Mr. John Peifer, featured me as an accordion soloist while we were on tour.
All those musicians and bands I grew up with that loved playing music and entertaining people.
As an accordionist, it would only be fitting to mention several of the (many) greats who influenced me. I had the good fortune to meet six of them: Frank Yankovic, Myron Floren, Charles Nunzio, Carmen Carrozza, Pietro Deiro Jr., and Dick Contino. Sadly, I never met two who significantly inspired my early studies: Charles Magnante and Art Van Damme.
I'd like to share three bits of trivia with you: Peter Deiro, the son of Pietro Deiro Jr., attended school with me at Franklin and Marshall College in the sixties. Charles Nunzio became my neighbor when I moved to Basking Ridge NJ in the eighties. I performed on stage with Frank Yankovic for his 75th birthday party at Timmers Grove, PA. What a nice guy Frank was! How awesome is all of this?
