I am primarily a bass player (both upright and electric). Started off on electric bass years ago and focused on classic rock to pay for college. These days, I enjoy playing a mixture of blues, folk, Americana, bluegrass (not purist bluegrass, though), and roots music. In short, a little blend of everything.
I would love to put together/join a group interested in doing things a bit differently. Whether that be originals, or doing covers in a creative fashion. Why not do classic rock covers with non-traditional instruments (ie, upright bass, acoustic guitar, banjo, etc.)? Or, maybe try some roots-based music as opposed to the typical Lexington bands-classic rock stuff?
Examples I am thinking of include The Agnostic Gospel Mountain Choir, Bruce Springsteen (doing his recent Seeger Session stuff), Old Crow Medicine Show, and Hayseed Dixie among others.
Ideally, would love to form a small acoustic group with a guitar player, percussionist (ie, drummer who can mix it up a little with other percussion), and other instrumentalist (mandolin, banjo, dobro, etc). Focus on vocals is a big priority as I think most musicians often forget about using vocals to tell a story and instead rely too heavily on fancy instrument tricks.
Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir (really worth looking up...Google them or check out CD Baby...the St. Hubert album is a prime example of what I'd like to do), Bruce Springsteen, Hayseed Dixie, Old Crow Medicine Show, Colin Hay (acoustic stuff from the Men-at-Work group of the 80's), Beatles, Allison Krause, Barenaked Ladies (their vocals and acoustic versions of tunes are amazing), Bowling for Soup (rock oriented, but good focus on catchy vocals), Frank Sinatra, plus many more...
too much to list, but good quality equipment for playing out.
