A native Montanan, Doc Richards served as an air evacuation medic during the Vietnam War while playing in rock bands in service clubs and working for Armed Forces Radio. In 1975, he assembled and played bass guitar for the the Wires, a neo-psychedelic San Francisco band, which included Cliff Jones, Taj Mahal's keyboard player and Chuck Quady, Bobby Bare's lead guitarist. He penned tunes for Country Joe McDonald and later Hoyt Axton. In 1986, he joined Troy Everett, formerly David Frizzell's rhythm guitarist and performed in venues throughout the central coast of California. He is a member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 20-623 AFL-CIO and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Currently playing rhythm guitar with the Great American Boulder Band, former members of the Relics, jamming with Beer Can Bob and doing sound and bass for Swallow Hill's annual Music in the Mountains Songwriter's workshop.
