So, I've posted ads various places and have met some really wonderful musicians, but for one reason or another things clash - not the same level of commitment, not the same interests, etc... Nothing against them - they're great (and likewise if you're looking for a drummer, bassist, or another guitarist, I have some great people to refer you to) - but I want like-minded people. So sorry if the rant to come seems too crass/blunt/over-zealous, but I'm just trying to make everything clear so I'm not wasting your time or my time.
Looking to form a band. I'm looking for a drummer, bassist, and keyboardist and/or guitarist. I play guitar and sing, and can also play bass and keyboard when need be. I'm a really good guitarist, albeit a unique and kinda jangly/psych approach (but not execution, if that makes sense). I'm not a good singer, but I have distinct voice, and that's very rock n' roll, right? I want to sing, only because performing a song seems indistinguishable from the process of writing a song - it's all the same process. And while I'm not the greatest singer, I AM a very good songwriter, and like to complete that process. That said, I'm also very much open to other writers/singers within the band context (ie: we both write and sing our own songs, and work on the arrangements together). In fact, I'd love this to be the case... coz though I'm a musician, I'm also a music fan, and love being around people whom I musically admire. And for reference, Bob Dylan (great songs, sh*t voice) > Meat Loaf (great voice, sh*t songs).
My influences are listed. I don't particularly care what yours are as long as they mesh well together. On a slightly related note, we're all greatly influenced by a select few bands. However, I don't want to create the band with 1 specific style in mind, and especially not 1 specific style that's already been done before. I'd like to create a unique sound based on our shared influences.
Ideally, I'd like people who are committed to making music their life (or at least career) if at all possible. No, I don't expect you to forsake your family and friends for some pipe-dream. But I do hope you'll be committed enough to "make it happen" (as the kids say). If you're not, then fine. I'm also open to people I musically (and hopefully personally) click with who are willing to be oncall when I need them. However, a big issue in the music industry today is getting paid (as clubs are ceasing to do so). And if you fall into the former category of people, all I can say is this: if I get paid, you'll get paid (in fact, likely you'll get paid at the expense of me getting paid, as I don't really care about that for the time being). However, I don't have lots of money myself. So if I don't get paid, you won't, either... and I'd like people who understand that and believe in what they're doing enough to *know* it will eventually pay-off (if you don't believe that much in what you're doing, then why would you do it?).
I'd prefer to start something from the ground up. I'm willing to join a band looking for the above, but I won't join a band just to play someone else's songs on an instrument I'm *kinda* good at (ie: bass). If that's what you're looking for, I wish you the best of luck and as mentioned have people I can refer you to... but I'm not that person.
Ideally, people would have "professional equipment"... but let's face it, it's not that big of a deal. Pink Floyd started by ordering ever instrument in the Sears catalog, Marc Bolan pawned his 1 guitar to pay rent at the end of every month (then bought it back when he got money), Elliott Smith borrowed a guitar to record his first demos that got him a record deal, etc... So really, I care more about commitment and who you are as a musician and person than I do about how much your instrument costs. That said, my guitar equipment is professional, and I have several guitars and a couple large/loud Fender amps. Everything else is... reasonably OK.
Likewise (and this doesn't seem like it needs to be said, but from past responses, apparently it does)... I don't want people who are just trying to make the musician's scene, and buying pointless things (with band money). If we need something, we'll get it. But paying for unnecessary things because it's what bands are "supposed" to do? My inner-Jew cringes at the thought.
And please... no one hanging on to a notion of what the music industry was 30, 20, 10, hell, even 5 years ago. It's changed and quickly changing, and means of getting music and your name out there are changing.
And I'm usually not as demanding as this all seems. I'm actually pretty easy-going and quiet *usually* (some exceptions). It's just, again, I want to make sure every possible conflict has been cleared up without the awkward "Oh really? Oh, well... I'll give you a call sometime!".
As for you... be a good (or at least creative) musician, a reasonably non-fu*ked-up person, young-ish or at least look young-ish (late teens and 20s is ideal), etc... Also, something I didn't think needed to be said but some do, so: I don't care what your sex (or gender, for that matter), ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc... is. While I'm a standard straight white male, if any of the above are a concern for you, we probably wouldn't get along well, sry2say.
And lastly, the name "Rosis" (from a Jacques Brel song, but seems sentimental and kinda nostalgic to me) is a tentative band name, but far from set in stone. I'm definitely more than open to thinking up a band name together... however, nothing too gimmicky or ironic (it's been done to death!), and nothing too long (see above), and nothing that's just a dumb joke (you know, like all of our bands' names in highschool).
T. Rex, The Church, Smashing Pumpkins, Jacques Brel, Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd, Regina Spektor, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Roxy Music, Cockney Rebel, Donovan, Radiohead, The Cure, Chainsaw Kittens, Jobriath, Falco, Lou Reed, Edith Piaf, Oasis, Third Eye Blind, New York Dolls, etc...
