ABOUT

22 Amateur Studio Musicians = $500 each=$11,000 + Me and 2 producers/Engineers $800 each = $3,200 for a total of $14,200 which will allow 16 days Studio Time = 14 hours each day.
Imagine you are an upstart band/musician having to spend a few days in a top quality studio to kick out 3 songs for a demo, racking up a bill of $4,000 for a week in the studio and paying a couple producers and engineers, which you’d have to pay yourself or amongst maybe 4 band mates.
I believe this group recording scenario laid out below allows us to gain more studio time at a distinguished recognized studio, have access to better equipment, record more songs, and obtain more master copies of your recordings all for a fraction of the price.
Let me tell you how this idea first came to me. My background is in film. I’ve acted, directed, and edited film, and commercial for some 8 years. All the while I would hobby with producing music, and writing music. I am in no way proficient in writing or even in music theory, but I have a lot of creative juices flowing and I thought to myself, there must be people out there like myself who haven’t done the band gig thing, haven’t recorded any material but have been playing around with the idea for years. Well what if I got those people together and they could help me record some of my songs, and in return I’d help them write their songs or allow them the opportunity to record songs they’ve already written. In the process, maybe we’d create some real gems. I write most of my music on the piano, so much of my melodies and progressions are pop rock in nature but I have tinkered around with writing blues licks, metal riffs and hip hop and I want musicians who can cross genres and not only be able to come in say, “look how great I can sweep pick, finger tap or shred at 600bpm”, but I want players who can write licks and riffs and put them into the structure of a song. I want to stress, I’d like to get musicians who are willing to play nice together and tackle at least 6 or 7 genres. I came up with the number of musicians and number of albums figuring into it how I can satisfy a decent number of genres, allow enough people to write their own music and allow others some creative liberty in performing my music.
I picture the selection of studio musicians like this (but nothing is set in stone, we can scrap all these ideas and just go with what works):
The groups will be divided into these selections.
(1) 3 member group - lead, bass, drummer
(2) 4 member group - lead, rhythm, bass, drummer
(1) 6 member group - vocal, lead, rhythm, drummer, keyboard, DJ
(1) 5 member group - Vocal, rhythm, drummer, bass, keyboard/piano

2 Pianist/keyboardist
1 DJ
2 Vocal leads
4 lead guitarist
5 rhythm guitarist
5 bass players
5 drummers/percussionist
We would also like to incorporate gender diversity and include 3 female musicians.
It will be a rigorous undertaking and we feel it will be appropriate to only entertain auditions from musicians between 15 and 49 years of age.
We seek least 5 of the members that can play more than one instrument along with some skill in a backing instrument (percussionist, brass, harmonica, stringed, other)
Myself, an amateur producer and amateur lyricist from 2003-2007, is looking to reignite my creative juices and take my first splash into the industry and have enlisted the help of 2 other more experienced producers and 1 engineer. We have come together to focus on an ambitious band making initiative. We’d like to get in touch with at least 30 or 40 amateur musicians. If you have been hired for a gig or two, that would be acceptable but I’d stress amateur to the fullest. We aren’t specifically seeking experts in music theory and proficiently schooled players (though we will be happy to entertain auditions from those type), but simply passionate musicians who have a love for playing and seek an opportunity to record their talents with professional equipment. We will narrow the field down to 22 musicians that will be mixed and matched into 5 groups. The type of musicians we want to come out to audition are versatile in style, genre, instrumentation and can work well with other musicians and have an extremely open mind when it comes to content and creativity. 2 of the songs will be based in the hip hop genre. We will rehearse for 3 weeks before entering the studio in order to maximize time we are allotted to record. Get in, nail the track, and get out.
I may be over ambitious but I think the amount of time spent and money spent we can create 6 EP length albums (24 songs) over a 16 day period (14 hour sessions) and encompass multiple styles and genres in 4 of the EP albums while 2 of albums will be to the 3 producer’s discretion, vision and specific genre. Each one of the musicians will be asked to contribute $500 towards the usage of one of the top recording studios in the Delaware valley as well as creating the master copies of tracks to be distributed. Renting of specific top quality equipment will also be covered under the fee. I will be contributing $800 to this project. If there is a cheaper way to record over a 2 week period and obtain masters of the recordings, please let me know, like I said, I am not in the music industry and I’m all ears to advice.
The results and rewards will be a resume building compilation of 21 original songs along with 3 rearranged covers. I have personally written 9 songs with intent on including them onto several of the 6 EP’s. I will help where I can in writing, arranging and building your own original piece for the remaining tracks but am sure most of you will have several gems that were just waiting to be recorded. Everyone will get a copy of the EP along with individual tracks. We will help you as an individual musician take that in essence, “demo”, and shop it around and market your music after the project is complete to the best we can. In the end, hopefully a committed band is formed from one of these studio bands and rights to a song or two are bought or a recording contract is given to one or all. Let me reiterate in closing I am not a professional musician, producer, or writer-this will be my first experience of spending more than two days in the studio and having access to such grandiose equipment, to me this will be a once in a lifetime chance to learn the ropes of creating music in a structured way. The other producers and engineers while having over 20 years of experience between them are still new to the idea of constructing albums based on amateur talent so it will be a great leap of faith for them as well. In the end we will all be in this together and hope that something very magical and unique will spring from these 2+ weeks together. I along with the other members of this project look forward to meeting you potential participants in this landmark project!

Good Luck!
