Florida Music Scene

Florida is best known these days as the home of NCAA football and basketball national championships, but there is also a great deal of musical heritage. In fact, The School of Music at the University of Florida in Gainesville is one of the best places in the state to begin a career as a musician. Students are trained by established music educators to perform after college and also learn to combine musical skills with scholarly research.

Miami, Jacksonville, and Orlando are the major hubs of activity in Florida. Orlando is stereotyped as the home of DisneyWorld, so many people ignore its thriving music industry. Matchbox 20, Seven Mary Three, and JoJo were able to obtain record deals by gaining popularity in Orlando. Justin Timberlake’s first taste of stardom came from the Orlando-based boy band N-Sync.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is Jacksonville’s most acclaimed export, along with Molly Hatchet, 38-Special, and other southern-fried rockers. Jacksonville is probably the most accomplished music town in Florida; it was named of the top 10 music cities by bizjournals.com. 8 Jacksonville bands were signed over the past two years and over 100 bands have been signed to major labels over the years. Rock acts Shinedown and Yellowcard have enjoyed national fame since becoming discovered in Jacksonville.

Miami’s live music scene is different from most places. Its nightlife is dominated by local DJs and Latin clubs. This doesn’t mean that an aspiring rock acts can’t be found. In the 70s, KC and the Sunshine Band got their start in the disco clubs of Miami. Also, Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine became a huge success for the Cuban community during the 80s.

The Social is a venue in Orlando that books both national and local bands. Also, Adobe Gila’s has an open mic night for those who want to get a little practice. Partygoers in Miami stay up late! The Rock `n’ Roll Discotheque is a perfect place to hang here on the weekend. This eccentric club holds 600 people, hires independent bands and has a 24-hour liquor license. If you’re in Jacksonville, Freebird Café is a must visit. It pays tribute to Jacksonville’s Lynyrd Skynyrd and books rock acts in a two-story building.
