Illinois Music Scene

Illinois has been a very influential state in producing a wide variety of music. Some of the most notable musicians from Illinois are Alison Krauss, Gretchen Wilson, Styx, and Cheap Trick. After World War II the Chicago blues scene had a major hand in creating rock and roll. Black blues pioneers like Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon, and Muddy Waters paved the way for other artists to continue in the blues craft.


Chicago has contributed most of the music in Illinois. Its scene is comparable to other high-level markets such as New York and Los Angeles. The Smashing Pumpkins became one of the pioneers of alt-rock and grunge-rock during the 90s. They proved that grunge bands did not have to start in Seattle to make it in the industry. One of the most well-known rock festivals, Lollapalooza, helped to further validate Chicago as a credible leader in the music world.


Famous rag time composer Artie Matthews and Morris Day of the Time hail from Springfield, Illinois. This city also has a thriving ballet and dance scene. The Springfield Summer Arts Festival has all kinds of music ranging from opera, to classical, to rock. The summer event also offers many different types of food, performing arts, and games.


Rockford’s most famous export is the modern-rock band 3 Doors Down, a group billed as the second coming of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Also, check out beetcafe.com which features video clips of local musicians from the Rockford area.


Best Venues to Play in Illinois


Chicago – Martyrs’ has free parking, great music, and is cheap. This place can pack a lot of people when bigger acts come to town.


Springfield – Marly’s Pub books national, regional, and local acts. They recently upgraded their sound system, making this club a treat for bands.


Rockford – Woody’s On Main is a club that focuses on the growing acoustic music scene in Rockford. Woody’s is easily seen and very accessible from the city.
