ABOUT

Trumpeter Dale Curtis has taught music in Ketchikan, Alaska since 1987. He taught elementary music, directed the University of Alaska Southeast Jazz Ensemble and is now retired as the director of bands at Ketchikan High School.

He holds a BA and MA in music education from the University of Idaho's Lionel Hampton School of Music. He also attended the US Armed Forces School of Music in Norfolk, VA. He has a wide range of musical experience and is comfortable with all styles of music from jazz to classical. Awards include two time, first place winner of the Jazz Soloist Competition at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. As a student at the Lionel Hampton School of Music, Curtis performed as jazz soloist and lead trumpeter with the Jazz 1 Big Band and was leader of the student jazz combo, JAZZMANIA.

His professional experience includes principle trumpeter and section leader for the 82nd Airborne Division US Army Band as well as numerous clubs and studio dates in his home state of California. While in Alaska, Curtis founded and performed as lead/jazz trumpeter for the Ketchikan Jazz Society Big Band. He also performed as lead/jazz trumpeter with Mel Flood Big Band in Juneau and with the Sitka Fine Arts Camp Faculty Big Band. He has performed as principle trumpeter and soloist for the SE Alaska Symphony in Ketchikan and performs with the Juneau Symphony.

Notable artists he has been in performance with include Slide Hampton, Bobby Shew, Diane Reeves, Urbie Green, Lionel Hampton, The Supremes, John Clayton, Terrell Stafford, Bob Kindred, Ed Soph, Bob Athayde, Paul Meyers, and Ann Phillips. During a leave of absence from teaching Curtis was employed by Princess Cruises where he performed in a show band aboard the Dawn Princess in Alaskan and Caribbean waters. Curtis recently appeared as a guest soloist with the GREATLANDERS, US Air Force Jazz Band.
He is willing to tour for the right gig. Curtis has great jazz and lead chops and is an excellent reader.
