Josh began playing drumset in Dallas, TX at the age of fourteen. After studying percussion in high school with Shawn Schietroma, Josh was accepted into the College of Music at the University of North Texas. In addition to studying orchestral and marching percussion, Josh explored the application of caribbean, Afro-Cuban, and Brazilian music to drumset, and studied jazz with Ed Soph (Woody Herman, Duke Ellington) and Ignacio Berroa (Dizzy Gillespie).
After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in music, Josh taught percussion at several schools and performed actively throughout Texas, primarily with One Credit Hour, a professional caribbean style entertainment group which he founded.
From 2007 to 2008, Josh lived and played in Salvador, Brazil, and soon after relocated just outside of Seoul, South Korea, where he currently lives with his wife Michelle. He regularly plays with “Pet Rock”, a reggae funk/rock band, “Just”, an original pop music trio, and the “Nic Travis Quartet”, a jazz ensemble featuring Michelle Schusterman on steel pan.
Josh considers himself fortunate to have performed and/or studied with several outstanding percussionists in recent years, including Gregg Bissonnette (Maynard Ferguson, Toto), Andy Narell (Sakesho), Jose Aponte (Promark artist), Gary Chaffee (Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny), Steve Houghton (Gary Burton, Freddie Hubbard), and Paul Wertico (Pat Metheny).
