ABOUT

.tornsoul.
Essentially what we do is old school R&B in the Stax/Volt mode, along with some ska and reggae. Having said that, our broad goal is just to play real music with good musicians, something that has been sorely lacking in the pop music scene for a while now, but seems to be making a comeback.
The current members have been playing for many years. The lead singer, Kelli, has been in many local bands, including The Subcontinentals, Big Nick and the Cydecos, and Lake Effect. I was in a popular rock-a-billy band in the eighties called The Rock-A-Dials; the bass player was in another popular eighties band called Those X-Cleavers; the keyboard player and drummer have been in numerous bands, and we have an all-female horn line that is super-hot. We came together as friends who love music and enjoy playing together.
Musical influences are all over the place on an individual basis, but as a group we are doing covers by a variety of old and new artists such as Aretha, Mayer Hawthorne, Raphael Saadiq, Nick Lowe, Los Lobos, Al Green, Gloria Jones, The Temptations, Otis Redding, Dee Dee Warwick, and others. The idea is to have strong vocals and a strong horn line as the centerpiece, surrounded by tasty keys, guitar, and bass.
