New Orleans Musicians

Incorporating influences from the many cultures that have embedded themselves in the history of the city, New Orleans has been a musical melting pot and has produced some of the most recognized musicians of all time. The city is synonymous with the sounds of jazz and Dixieland and many of the genre’s founding fathers originated from the New Orleans area such as Joe Oliver, Kid Ory, and most notably the famous Louis Armstrong. One of the most unique aspects of the city are the “funerals with music”, but more commonly referred to as “jazz funerals”.

Next to its fame for jazz, the city is also gained recognition for its distinguishing variety of rhythm and blues which helped influence the development of rock and roll. The Dixie Cups, known for the hit “Chapel of Love”, had the distinction of bumping the Beatles out of the Billboard Hot 100’s top spot. Later in the 1960s and 70s, New Orleans became a center for funk music and proudly claimed such musicians and groups as George Porter, Jr. and The Meters as their own.

In the 1980s, as hip hop was gaining popularity, the city was giving this new sound its own variation called bounce music. Though it never found success commercially outside of the south, its popularity remained vibrant throughout the region during the 1990s. In more recent years, New Orleans Rap has received much acknowledgment with the success of recent artists such as Master P, Lil Wayne, Mystikal, and Juvenile. The area has also been known for its own style of southern rock with its bands like Cowboy Mouth, Dish Rip Rock, and Better Than Ezra.

New Orleans also hosts a list of clubs and bars along Bourbon St. in the French Quarter of the city that showcase numerous musical acts. Since its inception in 1934, The Famous Door has seen performances from many celebrated musicians including the city’s own native Harry Connick Jr.

In addition to its well known establishments, the city also puts on several annual music festivals. Its New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, often known as Jazz Fest, has brought the likes of artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Buffett, and the Dave Matthews Band. In addition, the Voodoo Music Experience is held every year during Halloween weekend and has displayed the talents of groups such as Eminem, Green Day, The White Stripes, and Nine Inch Nails. The city’s world famous Mardi Gras parade and festival also bring countless musical performances to the area.
