Boston Musicians

Being one of the first cities founded in the country, Boston has played a significant role in the musical development within the U.S. since its founding in 1630. Ranging from the world renowned Boston Symphony Orchestra to famous artists like James Taylor and Aerosmith, the city has produced some of the most respected musicians of all time.

Associated with pioneering the sound of surf rock with his hit recording “Let’s Go Trippin’”, Dick Dale is one of the most influential rock n’ roll musicians to come from the Boston area. In addition, the city is the birthplace for the band created in its namesake. With hits like “More Than a Feeling” and “Peace of Mind”, Boston became a music icon of the mid 70’s and early 80’s. Another artist who also helped define this era was Donna Summer who gained the title “Queen of Disco” after hits like “Love to Love You Baby”.

Boston has also been witness to two of the nation’s most recognized composers of the last century; Leonard Bernstein and John Williams. Bernstein, an area native, is attributed with writing the music to the hit Broadway plays West Side Story and On the Town. John Williams, who is accredited with writing the scores to movies like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Jurassic Park, was also the conductor to the famous Boston Pops from 1980 to 1993.

In the early 1980’s, Boston produced two of the biggest pop groups ever by launching the careers of both New Edition and New Kids on the Block which eventually helped create the “Boy Band” genre. On top of contributing these two groups, it was also the beginning point for rock bands like The Cars, The Pixies and The Lemonheads. In the 1990’s, the resurgence of ska music gained a strong following in Boston with bands like The Allstonians and Skavoovie & the Epitones. The most popular ska band to come out of the area was The Mighty Mighty Bosstones with their hit “The Impression That I Get” which reached #23 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and #1 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks.

In addition, Boston is also home to a strong punk rock following which has started the careers of both traditional and emo groups alike. The best known bands include that of American Hi-Fi, Mission of Burma, The Dresden Dolls, and the Dropkick Murphys who have most recently been recognized for their song “I’m Shipping Up To Boston” featured in the Academy Award winning movie The Departed.

Lately, Boston has provided the music world with several successful hard rock bands like Godsmack, Killswitch Engage, Powerman 5000 and Staind. However, softer alternative rock bands, like Guster, have also emerged from this area and proven to gain a substantial level of notoriety.
