ABOUT

Manny Lopez-Hand Percussionist Manny Lopez was born in San Juan Puerto Rico and has been a professional percussionist for about 34 years. He began his percussion journey at a very young age, playing in the street and at carnivals, talent shows and other places. His professional career began at age 14, with Guiro and His Montuno Band. This group of veteran musicians nicknamed him el bebe, the baby, because he was the youngest member. Manny developed his unique way of playing percussion, mastering different kinds of drums and minor percussion instruments as well. He accomplished this with the help of many wellknown artists and percussionists, as well as salsa and merengue bands, both in New York and in his native Puerto Rico. Manny has toured throughout the Caribbean islands, Dominican Republic, Haiti, the Virgin Islands, Panama, and more. His travels have given him the opportunity to learn the rich culture and drumming styles of the islands. Manny is still very active in the drumming community of the Tampa Bay Area. He performs as a freelance artist with different bands, conducts workshops and classes, and leads the Afro Caribbean drumming ensemble Iya Bakoso (Mother Rhythm). Manny is a very creative musician and has many other projects in mind for the future. "I'll be kicking those drums as long as I'm still alive and God want me to,he says >
