Born in the backwoods of Monroe County Georgia, Monroe Blakkk has presented himself to the music industry as the savior of Hip Hop. With a new, positive spirit and a determined attitude, Monroe is setting new standards in Rap Game.
No longer are the rules set in stone that a southern rapper can only do southern drawl rap, Booty Shake or Crunk Music. Monroe possesses multiple styles, straight-forward technique, and a storytellingesque smooth flow that is one of the best in the game.
Little is known about Monroe’s musical talents in the early stages of his development. Initially, Monroe would socialize with other artist in the Macon area to hone his craft. It wasn’t until Monroe teamed up with Fletcher Batts that his career began to look more promising. Fletcher encouraged Monroe to be himself. Fletcher gave step-by-step instructions on how Monroe could take his God given skill to the next level. The first and most important step was “despite the entire negative aspects, environment and scenarios that were surrounding you in your life, use that negative energy as fuel for the music that you create”.
Step 2: “ Stop listening to the radio because you would only end up emulating what commercial radio wants you to hear and want you to be.”
Step 3: “Research, Review, and Rewrite. Of all of the favorite rappers that you have, study them. Listen to every word that is spoken and then rewrite a verse or two as if you would perform a remix or a guest appearance on the track. To be the best, you have to beat the best, and what better way to become better than the ones who came before you than to study their techniques.”
When Rap Music was first introduced, it was all about parties, dance battles, mic battles and individual expression. It wasn’t until the music hit mainstream that young people realized that they have an outlet. Rap has loss a great deal of that self expression due to many behind the scenes forces.
Fletcher’s challenge to Monroe appear to be working. With his guidance, Monroe has developed a melodic flow that reflected not only his perspective, but also the relative perspective many others. “Real talk is what his skill is to Real people. Yes the glorification, the bling-bling, the rims and ladies is all great, but the average guy aspires to get these things. But before getting them, he still just like you and me.”
Monroe’s first public project is the concept mix CD “Welcome to the Boondocks: Introducing Monroe Blakkk”. Monroe states that “the CD is my way of paying respect to the innovative cartoonist Aaron McGruder and his style of political satire. I always read the comic strip when I could, but seeing the cartoon really inspired me. My style is mostly satire, a little humor, and some in-your-face dialogue, EXACTLY like the cartoon. So if you throw in some tight beats, a few snippets, interludes and commercials from the cartoon and you have Welcome to the Boondocks Mix CD: Introducing Monroe Blakkk.”
There isn’t a lot of substance in Hip Hop Music today, but especially in Rap Music. The industry has been missing a mainstream rap artist that has both commercial appeal and a social conscience. The list of artist that are out today that possess substance is EXTREMELY short. With the debut of the mix CD Welcome to the Boondocks: Introducing Monroe Blakkk and the follow-up Return to the Boondocks: The Revenge of the Nigga, Monroe will stake his claim as an MC who not only can move the crowd, but can offer thought provoking, comical, jaw-dropping, in-your-face and yet serious entertainment.
There is not another MC like Monroe Blakkk
