About
As an artist, Nick Grinlinton's professional experience includes performing guitar in multiple styles, composing and arranging for small and large ensembles, recording, and teaching in multiple settings and idioms. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from The University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory of Music in May 2010. He holds his formal degree in Jazz and Studio Music.
During his four-year stint at the Conservatory, Nick studied privately with internationally acclaimed musicians including Bobby Watson and Rod Fleeman for jazz studies as well as with Douglas Niedt for classical guitar. Additionally, he studied with master teachers Mick Goodrick and Mitch Haupers in a series of masterclasses held in Northampton, MA in June 2009.
As a college student, he participated in Bobby Watson's Concert Jazz Band, backing artists such as Randy Brecker, Jaleel Shaw, and Sean Jones. While in the group, he participated in the world premier and recording of Watson's Gates BBQ Suite. He also performed with the group in various venues around the Midwest. Other notable experiences as a student includes opening up for the Dave Weckl Band in August 2006 at the Trails West Festival as a solo act, winning an award with the PTA Reflections contest for best original composition in 2006, participating in the Coleman Hawkin's Mid-West All-Star group put together by Missouri Western State University in June 2005, and performing with the Missouri All-State Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Fred Sturm in January 2005.
As a composer, Nick writes with a penchant for lyrical and logical melodies with sophisticated underpinning harmonies. He has composed extensively for solo guitar, groups with smaller instrumentation, and has experimented composing and performing with real time looping effects and other electronics. As a performer, he has played in numerous theater productions and shows that run the gamut from 80‘s rock music to jazz, soul, funk, r&b, and singer / songwriter, among other genres and acts. Nick currently resides in New York City as a freelance performer, instructor, composer, and arranger. For more information about Nick, please visit http://nickgrinlinton.com.
