Ohio Music Scene

Ohio is home to many established musicians. Maynard James Keenan of Tool, Joe Walsh, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, and Devo all hail from this state. Cleveland is Ohio’s biggest music town, holding the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. You would think that all legends of rock would aspire to be honored within the Hall of Fame’s walls, not the Sex Pistols. They refused to be present at their inducted, telling the hall to “piss off”, fitting their punk-rock reputation quite well.

So why was Cleveland chosen as the location for the hall of fame? In 1983 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was trying to decide between the cities of Memphis, Cincinnati, New York, and Cleveland for the location of the museum. Cleveland residents and civic leaders made it very clear that they were interested in housing the hall of fame. Cleveland pointed out that the man who coined the term rock and roll, radio DJ Alan Freed, was from their city. Also, Cleveland was the site of America’s first rock and roll concert. Rock isn’t the only type of music that Cleveland is known for. Cleveland-based Bone Thugs and Harmony became one the best-selling hip hop acts in the 90s with their signature furious style of rap.

Over the past few decades Cincinnati has become a hotspot for music festivals. Macy’s Music Festival began in 1962 as a jazz festival, but quickly began to allow R&B, hip-hop, and rock. Blessed Union of Souls and 98 Degrees have been able to build successful careers coming out of Cincinnati.

Bootsy Collins, The Ohio Players, and Bootsy’s Rubber Band gained notoriety in Dayton, which was known for its thriving funk scene in the 70s. Today, the annual Dayton Music Festival is a great place for local musicians to have an opportunity to play for the city.

Best Venues to Play in Ohio

Cleveland – The Beachland Ballroom and Tavern is the coolest venue in town because of its non-corporate philosophy and diverse atmosphere. Founders Mark Leddy and Cindy Barber opened the club with the goal of helping out unique bands in the area.

Cincinnati – The Blue Note books an eclectic mix of musicians, ranging from acoustic to rock. Every Thursday they have a college night where the admission age is lowered to 18.

Dayton – Canal Street is an intimate venue where artists like Mary Chapin Carpenter and the Dixie Chicks have played. The atmosphere is wonderfully reflective of the music and there isn’t a bad seat in the house.
