Onome (pronounced like "On a May" afternoon) is a vocalist, performance artist and poet. She comes from a long line of wordsmiths, storytellers and folk artists from Urhoboland in the Nigerian delta.

Onome's richly textured contralto draws comparisons to Sade, Nina Simone and Cassandra Wilson, yet her lush harmonics, lyrical inventiveness and genre-transcending style put her in a class of her own. At 16, she started riveting audiences nationwide with her spoken word poetry. Since then, her focus has expanded to singing and songwriting, resulting in collaborations with such acts as avant-soul band Muthawit and stutta-step producer DJ Kiva.

Her sensual mix of eclectic, euphoric sounds was recently featured on DJ Kiva's album "Degrees of Freedom," and a film score for the documentary "Making Waves, Saving Lives." Her talent as a wordsmith/songstress has been recognized by such diverse institutions as Poets and Writers and Dancetracks - where the title song for "Degrees of Freedom" reached 2 on the charts.

Onome's work tends to focus on the internal landscape of the soul, liberation, love, the nature of ecstasy, unconventional beauty in unexpected places, the infiniteness of possibility, the contradictions we negotiate as spiritual beings having human experiences, and the magical miscellaneous.

She has a music residency at La Negrita, 999 Columbus Avenue @ 109th Street in Manhattan, Sundays at 9pm. No cover. Set + open cipher. Bring your instruments!
