Portland Musicians

Beginning its musical contribution in the ‘60s with the Kingsmen and their hit “Louie, Louie” and then in the early 90’s during the expansion of grunge and alternative, Portland has put itself on the map as a starting point for many successful bands. In addition, the city has also played a major role in the radical feminist music of the Riot Grrrl movement created by women musicians involved in the underground punk and indie rock scene.

Some of the most dominant bands to come out of the Portland area have included groups such as Everclear and The Dandy Warhols. In most recent years, bands like The Decemberists, The Shins, and Pink Martini have added their names to the list and been featured on shows and movies like Josie and the Pussycats, The West Wing, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Sopranos, and Saturday Night Live.

As well as the groups it has produced, Portland also sports a comprehensive array of music venues which consist of places like the Aladdin and Roseland theatres, which have seen performances from the likes of the famous Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Tech N9NE, George Jones, The Black Crowes, and the most recently successful group Feist. Another venue that attracts much attention for its showcase of indie groups is the Doug Fir Restaurant & Bar Lounge which has seen shows from Dahlia, The White Rabbits, Caribou, The Velvet Teen, and VHS OR Beta. Portland also has several music festivals, one of which is the Waterfront Blues festival which began in 1987 and has displayed the talents of acts such as Etta James, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Booker T & the MGs, and John Lee Hooker.
