My name is Perry. I recently moved to Battle Creek from Williamsport, PA. I am a guitarist and vocalist and looking to make some music. I am 34 years old. I’ve been playing for 22 years. I’ve been singing for about 11 years now. I’ve been involved in many bands over my 22 years but most recently (about 11 years) have “gone Acoustic” and pretty much have been doing a solo act (with a couple of bands in between). I have a songbook of 264 songs to choose from and growing. In my songbook I’ve arranged each song similarly. I also have a separate bass transcription book because I change keys and capo position often.
I am basically an acoustic strummer and tend to “make the cover songs my own.” I mean this in the sense that I really don’t try to cover songs exactly as presented by the original artist. I try to gather the main idea of the song and then create my own cover of the tune. I do have some of my own original tunes as well. In the past, my song choices have been considered by the people around me to be obscure instead of mainstream. But over my time of playing gigs I have learned the hard lesson that the audience is the key, not me. So I made a deal with myself to play music a good portion of people will know while at the same time playing music I enjoy to play. I think that’s a good balance. However, I still get my obscure stuff in once in a while i.e. Arnold Layne from Pink Floyd or anything from the Crash Test Dummies.
I am looking to hook up with somebody that will maybe know the music scene around here better than I do. I actually know nothing about the Battle Creek music scene and feel overwhelmed at the prospect of starting to go out and get gigs again. In a perfect world I would be playing gigs about twice a month and make a little money doing it. I am interested in mostly sticking to my 264 song songbook simply because I have a bunch of time invested in them. However, I am not opposed to adding some new tune suggestions from band mates.
I live in Lakeview, and have a small but ample rehearsal space in my basement. I have a 300 watt Samson PA set up and in ready to plug into. I even have a crappy bass for rehearsal purposes. And, so far, it seems that my new neighbors are fine with a little music coming from the house. So, let me know if any of this interests you! I’m always glad to meet new musicians!
