I've been looking at what other gigging area and out of area bands play and those who get called to play at festivals. Most of them cross genres and play tunes that the audience and relate to, clap hands, sing and have a good time: Classic Rock, Blues, Jimmy Buffet-style, some up-tempo Country / Country Rock and throw in a few ballads or slow tunes for dancing, a long jam tune or two. Give 'em a good 2 or 3 hours of music and fun.
This is how I envision the start of a successful local / regional gigging band:
BAND MEMBERS
Rhythm Guitar / Vocals *
Lead Guitar / Rhythm and Vocals *
Keyboards / Lead and Backing vocals
Bass (Vocals would be a plus but not mandatory)
Drums (some Vocals would be a plus)
Harp / Lead and Backing vocals would be a great addition
I would like at least one female player / Vocalist
STEP ONE
Find / Name potential members
Contact them to determine interest and availability
Meet and discuss the project (no instruments)
STEP TWO
Short jam sessions to determine talent and compatability
Work up a few easy songs - assess pro / con of each potential member
STEP THREE
Select and notify potential members
Determine availability and dedication to the project
Each member contribute potential set lists
Plan practice session dates / times
STEP FOUR
Work up a few songs to best possible level
Re-assess our own strengths / weaknesses and determine roles
Invite outside musicians / others for constructive critique
STEP FIVE
Plan "Set Lists" and individual roles
Demo Recording of 3 - 5 songs - each member gets copies
Market Ourselves
Play for "peanuts" / Pay our Dues
- Local charity events / private gigs
- Offer to open for other known Bands for the experience
THE FINAL FRONTIER
GET PAID TO PLAY!
I figure if we start just after New Years and seriously work at this, we can be to STEP 5 by May or June. By this time next year, I foresee us having a regular weekend job (even if it is just a local place for scratch).
