Hey there, my name is Seth and I’m looking for people who’d like to start a rock and roll band.
I’m a 24 year old songwriter who has a love for writing short, catchy/memorable pop/rock songs. The songs posted on this page were made on a karaoke machine (except for the acoustic tracks – three of my newest songs) and are just rough ideas of the sound. Aside from how those (terribly cheap) recordings came out, I write straightforward rock and roll songs while avoiding a nostalgic/novelty act-type sound (I say that because nothing in mainstream music has straight rock and roll in it anymore). At the base of all great rock music is basic rock and roll – I just want to strip away the excess (I don’t even use distortion – think it’s become a little cliché haha).
My personal aim is to become a great songwriter and I work at it every day. I’m finally at a point in my writing where I’m almost 100% satisfied with my songs (as an artist I tend to think I can always do a little better) and quite proud of them.
I imagine the band having a nice repertoire of quality originals and covers – sort of a foundation to eventually expand from creatively. As a live act I imagine the music being very exciting, loud (depending on the song), up-tempo and generally just a lot of fun for both the band and the audience (not that anyone really aims for the opposite haha).
I’m looking for a lead guitar player, a bass player, and a drummer (and possibly a piano player if one is found!). I would prefer people around my age (early-mid twenties) but am open to whoever is interested. I’d like to play rhythm guitar, sing and write songs. If others can write songs well too that’d be great to have more than one writer in the band. Also, it’d be great if others can sing so we can trade lead vocals and harmonize together (actually that’s a must!).
I’m excited to hear from anyone so contact me here at BandMix or at nextcongress at yahoo dot com.
Thanks,
Seth
I listen to music from the current era back to the beginning of the phonograph. Everything has an influence whether it influences me to be a better musician or influences me to stay away from the genre completely (numetal – ugh!).
The artists that influence my writing currently (though I don’t try to copy them) are: The Everly Brothers, The Beatles, Brian Wilson, Phil Spector (‘60s girl and guy groups). I’m probably forgetting others… What mostly influences me about the above artists is how they crafted perfect, concise pop/rock songs that are completely memorable and exciting. I concentrate on those things too: original melodies, nice harmonies, the energy, the timelessness… I really love the songwriting teams of Lennon/McCartney, Goffin/King, the Bryants, Leiber/Stoller, etc.
I realize those are all old bands/musicians but like I said before – I’m not trying to do anything nostalgic. I believe it’s well accepted that the people mentioned were masters of their craft and I just want to make music that’s on the same quality level. Obviously you don’t need to have the exact same influences to contact me!
Some of my favorite music was recorded before the ‘60s – all the jazz, blues, folk, country, rhythm and blues, and bluegrass such as: Clifford Brown, Robert Johnson, Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James, Scott Joplin, Leadbelly, Maddox Brothers & Rose, Woody Guthrie, Freddie Hubbard, Blind Blake, etc. I could go on and on!
Here’s another short but varied list of stuff I love listening to (very few of them being actual influences): Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Dave Brubeck, Charles Mingus, Animals, BB King, Joan Baez, the Band, Beach Boys, Jeff Beck, Chuck Berry, James Carr, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, CCR, Sam Cooke, Cream, Patsy Cline, the Byrds, Eric Clapton (and all his associated bands), Dinosaur Jr., Eric Dolphy, Doors, Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, Faces, Small Faces, Fairport Convention, Fleetwood Mac, Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons, Aretha Franklin, Herbie Hancock, Buddy Holly, John Lee Hooker, Led Zeppelin, Jerry Lee Lewis, Love, Meat Puppets, Louvin Brothers, Moby Grape, Thelonious Monk, Van Morrison, Mothers of Invention, My Bloody Valentine, New York Dolls, Nirvana, Randy Newman, Oasis, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Pavement, Pearl Jam, Liz Phair, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Rolling Stones, Simon & Garfunkel, Slint, Sly & the Family Stone, Michael Jackson, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Strokes, Supergrass, Television, McCoy Tyner, Velvet Underground, T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, Weezer, the Who, Van Halen, White Stripes, Stevie Wonder, Yardbirds, Zombies, etc. etc. etc. I have over 16,000 songs on my computer at the moment so this is a relatively small list!
Acoustic & Electric guitars, harmonicas, banjo, mandolin, half-stack amplifier.
Seth (rhythm guitar, songwriter, singer)
