A guitar player I was trying to hire hit me with this question at the end of an audition. He asked, "You seem like a nice guy. Why is it that you sometimes fall out so badly with your band members?" It caught me off guard cause you see I really wanted to get this guy.I wanted to give him a good answer but at the moment a good answer escaped me. One that would assure him that sort of thing could'nt possibly happen between us.

I don't remember what I mumbled at the time it being more than a year ago but sometime later this is the answer I came up with.
The guys that I have played with in the past and continue to play with are all kind of from the same school of how we do what we do. Myself, I come from an entirely different approach. I tell alot of colorful stories, but my background is actually alot of careful planning, thought, homework, time, effort, and rehearsal.

The musicians in my bands are not of that same school. How long has it been since they worked this hard in a band? They want to kick it with there girlfriends, catch the ballgame, spend time with the kids. They have other interest.

That's all great but it's not world class pro ball. It's not swinging for the fences. I fully expect my audience to have it's ass kicked preferably before the end of the first song. To do that requires a high degree of commitment. If your not prepared to do that, then with all due respect we probably won't get along.

You see there is nothing else for me. Since I was four years old on top of a coffee table singing into a rolled up magazine at my mothers beauty shop appointment I have been married to that audience. Some cats are married to their job or have a hobby. I'm married to that which defines me. The thing I do best. I am a lifer.
