I am a perfectionist who hates making mistakes. Counter melodies and knowledge of music is a must. I don't want to play with "powerchorders." Or people who just want to play covers all day. I try to play complicated syncopations and not just hit the high hat on the quarter note and the snare on 2 and 4. I grew up in "the Band"...not that "The Band" but the one where you wear a huge feather on your head, and march around at halftime of football games like a geek. So I'm fairly fundamentally sound with my rudiments, in other words.
I don't have but like 3 live gig performances, but I am solid. I understand dynamics and that I'm the beat. I can't make tunes with drums. (Unless someone wants to hook me up with 88 Toms)
If money weren't an issue in life, I would drop it all to rock out every day with people. I'll have a reason to either upgrade my kit or buy lots of new cymbals. 6 months no interest is an eternity to pay off. :)
I play to the level of the musicians around me. If the music is easy and boring, I'll be playing...easy and boring. If it rocks and I'm really into it, I turn it up. I "put on my game face".
I love rock. the 90's grunge is my thing. I also like to play with guitarists who throw a lot of jazz into their rock. Blues is ok, but it gets old quick.
If I could shape my skill set after one drummer, it would definitely be Matt Cameron or Sean Kinney. Cameron's syncopations are phenomenal, and Kinney's use of cymbals and quickness around the set are very underrated.
