Well, at the moment I'm 24, so here's my musical history and then what I'm looking for:
From ages 6-11 I learned organ (quit shortly after learning to read bass clef, somewhat use of pedals but not much). Since then I've played guitar. I don't own a bass, but I can play it, too (and not just root notes of guitar chords, I mean actually moving around). I played guitar in high school jazz band all four years. To be in jazz band, I had to be in marching band, wherein I played percussion (bass drum and quads). In high school concert band, college symphonic band, and college marching band I played baritone/euphonium (one of the least popular low-brass instruments, typically described as a miniature tuba or a trombone with valves instead of a slide). Since about four years ago I've been playing classical piano on a serious basis. I have four years of formal music theory training and two years of private college piano lessons. The past year I learned to play the violin, just the basics, but I can read and play music on it and know basically all the notes in first-position.
I would prefer to play guitar (rather than keyboards) in a band. I'm a strong rhythm player, able to listen to and support the lead guitarist (or other soloist). I'm also a VERY fluent lead guitarist, full of creativity with the knowledge and training of music theory backing it up. Ideally, the other guitarist of the band would be able to play both lead and rhythm as well to allow for trading off. There's nothing worse than a poor rhythm player, and nothing more obsolete than a poor lead. I would get bored playing only lead or only rhythm, and wouldn't wanna hog one spot either :).
I would be cool with playing keys in a band, seeing as guitarists are a dime a dozen. This is provided that the other band members have enough "substance" to carry their weight. Moreover, as much as I love the sound of the keys (as does everyone, I think), they really only work in a band when the other members provide a solid foundation. It's more of an auxiliary instrument for the band, so I would only be willing to play them (but more than willing to do so) if the rest of the band has their act together.
I'll be chronological here.... My influences began with mostly "old school" Metallica (i.e. "Black Album" and prior) with various metal/rock mixed in accordingly, as was enjoyed by the guys I jammed with.
Next came the advent of listening to as much classic rock, blues, Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Led Zeppelin, etc, etc, that I possibly could on the radio.
I'm not a jazz person per se, but I was in jazz band all through high school (guitar), so I'm rather open-minded on that.
Now, my influences are predominated by classical music. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, that sort of stuff.
The main gear I have includes a 1965 Gibson Melody Maker, a Stevie Ray Vaughan signature series Fender Stratocaster, an Ovation Standard Balladeer acoustic/electric, various pedals (I'm not too big into them, so I won't get specific), and a Fender Princeton Chorus Plus guitar amp (two 25.5-watt amps (51 watts total, don't ask, that's just what it is) and two 10-inch speakers). I also have a Roland E-38 keyboard (61 keys, velocity-sensitive, though not weighted keys). Oh, and a violin :).
