Influences

From the drum and fife of the American Revolution to The Marines' Hymn and John Philip Sousa's marches, music has always been part of the Marine Corps' tradition. Marine Corps musicians perform at national events and in more than 500 public and official performances each year.

EQUIPMENT

US Marine Corps Band, Audition Requirements:

The field audition is a requirement in order to determine the qualification of those individuals interested in becoming Marine Corps musicians. The audition is graded on a 0.00-4.00 scale and requires a combined score of 2.70 for minimum qualification to the field bands, as well as a 2.85 minimum qualification for entry into “The Commandant’s Own” Marine Corps Drum & Bugle Corps.

Brass and Woodwinds:
Prepared Solo Selection
- Minimum Grade V, preferably Grade VI, in difficulty. Concerto form with two contrasting movements, one lyrical, one technical.

Scales
- Major, Natural Minor, Harmonic Minor, and Melodic Minor
- Must be performed in the functional range of the instrument at the performer’s fastest, cleanest tempo from memory to
include arpeggios.

Sight Reading
- Concert and Etude excerpts, as well as marches in both cut-time and compound time.
- Contemporary excerpts in jazz swing, latin, funk, and pop required for trumpet and trombone

Guitar:
Prepared Material
- Perform material in four styles: Jazz Standard Swing, Latin, Funk, and Pop/Rock
- All selections must be performed with backing tracks, i.e. Band-in-a-Box, Abersold’s, iPod, etc.
- Lists of selections are available upon request

Scales and Chords
- 12-bar blues chord progression in various keys
- All major scales (3 positions) with arpeggios
- All jazz melodic scales (1 position starting on 1st, 2nd or 4th finger)
- Standard bob/blues chord changes in 12 keys
- Rhythm changes in 12 keys
- ii, V, I chord changes in 12 keys
- Maj7, min7, Dom7, min7b5 and dim7 chords utilizing inversions

Sight Reading
- Sight read lead sheet literature.

Electric Bass Guitar:
Prepared Material
- Perform material in four styles: Jazz Standard Swing, Latin, Funk, and Pop/Rock
- All selections must be performed with backing tracks, i.e. Band-in-a-Box, Abersold’s, iPod, etc.
- Lists of selections are available upon request

Piano:

- Perform material in four styles: Jazz Standard Swing, Latin, Funk, and Pop/Rock
- At least two selections must be performed with backing tracks, i.e. Band-in-a-Box, Abersold’s, iPod, etc.
- Lists of selections are available upon request

Scales
- Major, natural minor, harmonic minor and ascending melodic minor scales at a minimum tempo of 16th notes at 80bpm.
- All scales should be played in octaves with both hands.

Sight Reading
- Demonstrate ability to perform Real Book/Fake Book lead sheets in appropriate form. i.e. 1st time: melody, 2nd time: comp,
3rd time: improvised solo.
- Demonstrate ability to execute upper level harmony (7th chords of all qualities in inversions).

Percussion:
Snare DrumField Snare
- Medium Advanced/Advanced rudimental snare drum feature (no visuals)
- Performance of 26 Standard Rudiments at fastest/cleanest tempo
- Solo lists available upon request

Concert Snare
- Grade V, preferably Grade VI, concert etude for snare
- Sight read concert and etude excerpts, as well as marches in both cut-time and compound time.
- Solo lists available upon request

Drum Set
- Demonstration of various styles for drum kit: Swing in 2, Swing in 4, Trading 4’s in Swing, Funk, Rock/Pop, and a Latin styling.
- Sight read fully voiced excerpts, as well as horn cue “prep & kick” kick sheets in various styles.

Mallets (Xylophone/Marimba)
- Prepared Medium Advance/Advanced solo
- Solo lists available upon request
- Scales: Major, natural minor, harmonic minor and melodic minor at fastest, cleanest tempo with arpeggios from memory in two octaves.
