Who is this young, proud Mexica womyn who dares to leap into the professional performing arts spotlight? Who is this chica sabrosa who grounds her self in her roots and envisions celebrating Chicano awareness, empowering womyn and being an advocate for survivors of rape through her art? She is Valeria Muruato, daughter of Alfredo and Maria Muruato, born in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. Brought up in a highly musical household, she first hit the stage at age fourteen as Peróns mistress in a high school production of Evita. Valeria sang, danced, and performed her way through four years of high school and several years of college, playing trumpet in the school band, dancing and choreographing for the dance team, and combing it al in the schools theatre troupes. She received an associate of arts in music from El Paso Community College and went on to graduate from the University of Texas at El Paso with a bachelors degree in theatre, while she minored in dance. Of course this came with plenty of experience working tech (sets, lights, sound, costumes, make-upyou name it, shes done it all). Following her dreams, Valeria has performed in various professional venues in El Paso, Las Vegas, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Denver, including singing with sonora and variety bands, mariachi groups, belly-dancing, Folklorico, Flamenco and musical theatre. She is currently working with El Paso studio musicians, recording her first single. She is also preparing to launch a national tour in promotion of her first CD release, which will proudly include some of her dads creations as well as her own.
