Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist seeking like-minded individuals who understand that music is a business and the band is akin to the partners in the company. I want to find 3 or 4 other partners to start this company with.
I live in the Griggstown section of Somerset and I play guitar and sing. I have full rehearsal and recording ability at my house. I have been playing 25 years and I attended GIT back in 89 and again in 92. I have been taking vocal lessons for the past few years and really have made some large strides in the past few months as I have gotten more serious about singing.
in general I like a range of music with the front runners being Metallica, Eagles, Pantera, Billy Joel, Skynard, SRV, Styx, Nickelback, Journey. (There are more but this gets my point across) I try to make my songs heavy and sophisticated like Metallica with a real focus on lyrics and melody. I feel that guitar riffs have taken a back seat and I really don't hear too many songs that make me want to learn the riffs like Metallica did and does to me. I also feel that there isn't another commercially accepted heavy band that cares about melody and lyrics as well as riffs. I suppose Foo Fighters are along those lines, even Nickelback but I can't say they are very "riff" oriented in the sense that I am thinking.
As for the craft of songwriting I am of course still learning but I have read and taken many songwriting classes and read many books on the topic which have pointed out suggestions that I like to follow. One is that the core concept of the song needs to relate to and move people. Another big one is the fact that you should progress the story along each part of the song, not just repeat what some other part has stated already. You need to be articulate and convey a message. These are some of the points I believe and I think it gives a good idea of where my mindset is as it pertains to songwriting.
As for guitar, I also have a strong belief that if the solo isn't strong enough that the song can't exist without it then there either needs to be NO solo or one has to be written that adds to the song and not just fills in some time and sounds like a bunch of exercises strung together. I cared A LOT about technical ability my whole life and I believe I have the ability to technically pull off any song once I learn it. (Vai, Satriani, anyone) but I feel that solo's need to be approached with the same focus and melody as the main vocal line.
I do have an album worth of songs that I am currently recording and I was going to wait to look for a band but that may paint me in the light that I just want to have a band of "hired-guns". I do not, I would like to have a band that is a whole. I understand that not everyone writes lyrics but even drummers write and add to a song. Can you imagine a different drum part in Metallica's One. I believe in fairness and giving credit where credit is due. I have met too many singer/songwriters who want the other members to play the "hired-gun" role but do it for free. This is not what I am about. There are many, many moving parts to make a band run and songs, yet important, are not the only piece. I would like to approach the entire project as a company.
