ABOUT

The 2nd Line Jazz Quartet puts a fresh, toe-tapping spin on the Great American Songbook.

We take our name from the “Second Line,” the place where jazz was born, in New Orleans in the 1890s. Brass Bands were seen marching everywhere in the city and steady beat of their bass drums could be heard a block away. The second liners were people who followed behind the main procession and played snatches of improvised rhythm and melody in-between the beats. This type of syncopation turned rhythm on it’s head and gave birth to jazz, the uniquely American art form of the last century and this one.
