Ain't Just Whistlin' Dixie - Jazz Band

Ain’t Just Whistlin’ Dixie – Jazz Band exclusively plays traditional Dixieland Jazz with a gospel/spiritual emphasis. The primary feature of Dixieland jazz is "collective improvisation;" that is, rather than each musician taking a solo in turn (as in most styles of jazz today), Dixieland jazz musicians all improvise at the same time. The role of the trumpet or cornet in Dixieland is to play a “jazzed up” version of the melody or, when another instrument is playing the melody, to enhance the melody.
Improvisational skills with the ability to play-by-ear are critical to success in this role. We do not use any written music.

Our group specifically focuses on a traditional New Orleans style of Dixieland which uses collective improvisation. We place a heavy emphasis on playing gospel and spiritual songs in a Dixieland style. We have been influenced greatly by the Dixieland Gospel sound of Sam Levine out of Nashville, TN. Our sound has also been greatly influenced by the Dixieland group Tuba Skinny out New Orleans.
