PANDEMIC STATUS: thanks to a lot of professional and personal upheaval, I am not currently musically active. I hope to return to music in fall 2021. What follows is my description from better / more normal times.
For the past year or two I've been writing and performing with True to the Universe, an OC classic rock band, but I'm still keeping a lookout for other folks who might be interested in writing and performing if it seems like a good fit. (I would especially enjoy playing in a decent cover band, as I love playing music in lots of different styles and learning new stuff).
My music tastes are pretty weird and extend into lots of different genres (some of my music is pretty poppy, some is electronica, some is classical, some is heavy prog/metal), so I'm open to loads of different ideas. I'm from Scotland originally - I moved to OC for work in 2011. So a lot of the music I grew up with is virtually unknown here, whereas a lot of the music local people grew up with is a mystery to me (though I've tried to learn as much as I can). In my influences I've mainly listed artists I like that people in SoCal are likely to know.
I'm deeply passionate about music and wish I could spend more of my time playing it (hence my being open to new stuff), but I also have a busy and satisfying full-time job. So this is a hobby for me, just a very important one.
I've been writing and recording my own stuff for 20+ years, but I am comfortable with the fact that I am not front-man material. I don't have the voice or the ego required. I'm also not nearly as good a songwriter when I work solo as I am when I collaborate. I am also generally happier and better playing some role in production than I am with just playing one instrument - i.e. I love doing arrangements, recording, mixing, etc.
I am on sound cloud under Povich. The stuff you'll find there is all over the place though. You can reach me at 'andrewhowat' if you tweet.
