Ashes to Empire is the solo project of Kurt Hoffmann, formerly of Otto's Revenge, a punk/alternative band based St. Louis, Missouri from 1989-1997. Other projects include My Little Island, another St. Louis-based project from 1995-1996.

I began working on the solo Ashes to Empire project after moving to California in 1997 and more officially started recording in 1999. The project had many delays due to starting a family but finally started to get traction with recording sessions in Chico, California in 2008. I moved back to Santa Rosa from Redding in 2010 and met my current working partner, producer Neil Raphael. We finished 9 songs together working in conjunction with Scott Barwick and a combination of the original Chico tracks and Santa Rosa work. We added this to the lone surviving recording from 1999 for a complete first project of 10 songs due to be released in 2013.

Influences

My greatest musical influences from my youth were hardcore punk of the 1980s and jazz, although those influences can barely be found in my current music. Strangely I barely listen to music anymore so I'm very out of touch with anything current. I would say the only artist that comes to mind as an influence would be Beck, maybe the Beastie Boys to some extent. Primarily I'm influenced by St. Louis alternative bands from the 1990s plus whatever my producers add to the mix.
