I grew up dreaming of someday being a clone of Ella Fitzgerald. I doubt anyone can match her scatting talent, however, I believed that she was the most beautiful, most classy woman ever! Then came the day I realized that I would never be black or as voluptuous as she was. So I then decided that I could only try to emulate her style and throughout the years picked up a couple of others that I learned to like just as much. I loved listening to the RatPack and all of the rest of the standards from that generation, while all my friends were screaming at the Backstreet Boys I was freaking out because I found a rare version of a Volare by Dean Martin. I grew up on a healthy dose of country, oldies and learned to love Billy Joel and Queen. My mom is a classically trained pianist who knows more about Mozart's music than Wikipedia, and she was also my piano, band and vocal teacher throughout childhood. In high school Ben Folds and Jamie Cullum were my favorites and it's still hard for me to get sick of listening to them.
I started writing my own lyrics a couple of years ago as more of a therapeutic process than anything. To ensure that I didn't becoming a twitching basketcase during a very stressful time in my life, I started playing the piano as if it were a bazooka and sending music out into the void.
Eventually, I started playing improv songs for people at parties, the most famous being "Ashley and Josh." When I heard audience members throughout the next week, still singing Ashley and Josh (some loudly because they thought it was funny and some just singing to themselves because it was stuck in their head) I thought it was time to actually put some substance into the music. Thus, it started. Because I'm continually growing and changing as an individual, so does and so will the music.
Art always says something. It has a message.
