My band was known locally for our distinctive vocals, incorporating 2 and 3 part harmonies in much of our original material. I believe that a band should have lead and backing vocals whenever it calls for it and to show the depth achieved between each band member when there is a good "gel" and everything seems to just "fit".
There is a certain respect given among musicians when it comes to solid harmonizing. It is often something that has to be worked at in order to perfect it... the time and energy, the emotional highs and lows of the frustrations and then enthusiasm when it all finally comes together as it had been envisioned.
I started off singing acoustically and try to always give that aspect of my vocal talent the focus it deserves. I believe a good vocalist should be able to perform just as comfortably acoustically as when singing electronically.
I believe some vocalists can become too dependent on adding the reverb, the chorus, delay, in order to drown out mistakes. Dont get me wrong, I dont know any vocalist who doesn't enjoy hearing the added fullness and richness that different effects bring about.
While this is true in almost every vocalist I've met, rarely is equal time given to building the character and personality of one's vocals in an acoustic environment as well as electronically.
A perfect example of a vocalist displaying these little nuances that, in the end, give the song its memorable character.
