ABOUT

Boulder’s Dirt Poor Kings know that true rock can’t be delivered with synthesizers and skinny ties. That’s why at a time when most rock and roll is as diluted as light beer, DPK is serving up 100-proof bourbon that bites hard and burns on the way down—the way good rock and roll should. The band’s motto? “Be loud and break sh*t,” says singer/guitarist Retox King. Along with bassist Diablo King and drummer Cadillac King, DPK welds the aggression of Motörhead with the blues backbone of AC/DC, what Cadillac describes as the bastard son of Lemmy and Johnny Cash. All the elements are present in the band’s first single, “I Know,” a hot-rod rocker calling up echoes of Bad Religion and NOFX. DPK’s philosophy is spelled out in “Together We Drink,” a double shot of voodoo junkyard blues in which Retox takes the lead like a Baptist preacher with a buzzsaw. The band does a souped-up cover of Robert Johnson’s “Rollin’ and Tumblin’” that’s so greasy you can taste the motor oil. And the drunken swagger of “Country fu*k” is a backwater stomp that struts through a graveyard while a church burns in the background. Perhaps the band’s most emblematic song is “Hotter Than Hell,” a groove-blues monster that shreds like a hollow-body on fire. It delivers a brand of rock symbolic of the band itself: with no pretense. It’s not hip. It’s not cool. It’s the Dirt Poor Kings. And they’re claiming dominion over the world of rock and roll—by force.
