I spent my early 20s through my early 30s as a FT musician. I played the casino circuit, hotels, clubs, warm-ups, weddings and session work. Basically, anything to meet my monthly nut. All this being said, I sat in with acts often with only a rehearsal the night before the engagement or even just stopping in to see them play at another venue. It was fun, stressful at times, but fun.
Now I'm 50, a professional software engineer and I miss getting the chance to lock on with other players. I'm looking to have a little of that again. I know that I marked my preference 'just for fun' but I am willing to commit to local gigs with a reasonably predictable planning process.

EQUIPMENT
Today I play v-drums. When I was traveling / touring, I alternated between small accoustic kits and Simmons and other Roland kits before finally landing with v-drums. There are several advantages offered by sample based percussion. First and foremost, they sound consistently great. Next, they can be eq'd and blended in the FOH mix perfectly. Plus there's never any reason to travel with a drum shield.
If you're an old schooler like me, then you're probably familiar with proper stage monitoring. 3 things belong in the middle wedge: vocals, bass gtr and kick. Instruments are stage amps and side fills. DI instruments make that a breeze.
