Our band, Hyperfine, is a trio, but we are casually looking for other musicians to join us. A keyboard player, a bass player, another guitar player, or a singer could fit right in. Right now we are a lead vocalist, a drummer, and me on guitar and backing vocals. Elizabeth, Rick and I work at our music, and have a couple dozen songs described below, but we don't have plans to perform in public. We usually meet every other week at a rehearsal studio or a house. Our focus is on growing as musicians, and on recording. By recording I don't mean serious studio stuff with proper sound isolations and engineers, but I do mean something better than a little Zoom H2 handheld recorder. You can listen to the audio tracks to see what I mean.
Most of our music is vocal-centered, often ballads with instrumental breaks. They are folk or blues-derived. Tangerine (Zeppelin) or Here Comes the Sun, and some Neil Young songs are typical. We have some brighter and faster songs, but we have moved away from the heavy guitar rock and roll that I tend to do on my own. (I am mostly a guitar player.)
As for me, my style is classic rock, with usual cover tunes. Equally important are improvisations in blues and some classical influences. I've been working with modes and modal patterns, and have mastered some of them for improvisation. I like simplicity, such as working with just a few chords, especially when playing with others for the first time. I'm happy to play rhythm with some chord melody. My leads tend to be slow -- I usually try for the sound of the human voice. I do some shred and sweep picking technique, but sparingly.
Separate from our trio, I enjoy meeting other musicians for casual jams. I am happy learning songs note for note, and working on them, or just jamming.
