My approach as a bass player, is to bridge the gap between the guitars and drums. I don't like to follow the root note too much, and when I do I'm usually playing off the rhythm of the kick drum. I prefer to play music that has a lot of dynamics, going from heavy and loud to soft and ambient and everywhere in between. I use many effects, but make an effort to use them tastefully and sparingly.
