7-11-13 - Formula 5 (.formula5music) is an established touring original progressive funk jam band based out of the capital region. We write original music and have draw in many markets around the northeast. Our current bass player is stepping down on good terms due to personal (non-music related) reasons and we need to find someone ASAP. We have gigs scheduled through January (including large regional festival appearances) and need someone with professional gear and the personal drive to write diverse music in many styles, promote our band, and travel to play in new markets.

Some influences: Phish, Umphrey's McGee, Jeff Beck, Frank Zappa, Beatles, Traffic, Little Feat, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, moe., Clapton Projects, P-Funk, Tower of Power, Grateful Dead, Disco Biscuits, Stevie Wonder (you get the idea)

We play all over the northeast and particularly upstate NY. (Albany/Saratoga/Lake George/Lake Placid/Plattsburgh/Utica/Syracuse/Rochester/Buffalo/Boston, MA/Bridgeport, CT/Northampton, MA/Burlington, VT etc..) We all have flexible job schedules that allow us to play gigs Thursdays (here and there) through Sundays. We currently are doing the weekend warrior thing and we usually practice twice a week. We believe in our music and continue to grow rapidly.

Some things we need in a bass player: needs to be available and driven to learn our music, write music, and practice. MUST be able to sing some lead and backup harmonies on almost every song. Must be proficient in improvisational music (jazz, ambient, progressive, jam, etc...) Must understand music theory, modes, scales, harmony and the ability to read music is a plus. We are all in our early to mid twenties and ideally would like someone around the same age OR in a place in their life to pursue this dream. We don't necessarily need the musician with 15 years of live experience, we need the RIGHT bass player that understands pocket groove, music theory and has the right feel for our band both as a person and player. After all, we will be spending alot of time together on the road and practicing. We have about 3 albums worth of material already written and road tested as well.

We are very into all sorts of music but what really drives us are musicians like Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Phish, Herbie Hancock, The Band (Dylan too), Stevie Wonder, Zappa, Umphreys McGee, Grateful Dead, The Meters, Led Zeppelin, Primus, John Scofield, Ray Charles, all Jazz, Reggae, you name it -- it probably moves us.
