ABOUT

my story as told by Andy Gilbert, the jazz scribe

The greatest musicians don’t just play beautiful, stirring tunes. They spin captivating narratives that imbue each note and pause with coherence and meaning. As a composer and instrumentalist trained at Boston’s vaunted Berklee College of Music, Garry Norman knows all about the importance of intuition and skill, timing and texture, control, freedom and playfulness when it comes to telling a musical tale on the bandstand. He brings the same discernment and presence of mind to his arts leadership program, which guides people in their quest to find their own particular path through creative realms.

Norman’s improvisation-laced music is informed by jazz while drawing on kindred musical practices. Inhabiting an undefined space between contemporary jazz, new age, and instrumental pop, his prolific body of work is marked by shimmering melodies, soothing grooves, and his bright, lean, sinewy sound on the guitar. Following his muse has led him on a winding journey, a sojourn that has taken him down a largely untrod path. More than a calling, music has served as a vehicle for raising awareness, fostering compassion and expressing love in a world often hostile to emotional connection.
