I learn existing electric guitar lines by ear and apply theory to master them and write using original using theory from the masters. I play acoustic 20% of the time. I had my own project in the 90's. Wrote much original material, played covers and originals, got into serious tapping, sweep picking, arpeggios, fell in love, met lifelong friends, made a lot of people happy.
