ABOUT

Ok, I know solo projects sound douchey, but hear me out. I know this is lengthy, but I'm looking for something very specific:

First, let me tell you about myself.

I am twenty years old and I've been writing songs since I've been fifteen. That's not as long as others, maybe, but it's got substance. The lyrics I write are dear and personal to me, yet I believe they have a multiplicity of meaning that anyone can speculate on. I'm not selling a message, but myself for the world to draw their own conclusions from. The music I write demands power, but I don't want to be a metal band or an angsty acoustic soloist either. Those paths restrict to only one type of emotion, and I want to explore a lot of them. I certainly don't have that option sitting down in coffee shops crooning out love songs or screaming onstage about how governments or corporations or whatever lame-ass-bandwagon-bull-sh*t-you-wanna-jump-on are ruining our lives. I am neither a politician nor Jack Johnson nor anything in between.

I only have one cause. To create art for the sake of nothing at all.

I will admit that I am no expert on the intricacies of music theory. I have basic knowledge of harmony, chord progression, scale patterns, and the like, and though I do have some technical skill on a variety of instruments, I have always considered myself a far better composer than a musician. I pride myself on having a deft ear for what sounds good and what doesn't and rationalizing the reasons for these feelings. Thus, the songs I write are less about proving to the world that my guitar skills are unreal and more about presenting the whole as something impressive. I won't write your part (not because I couldn't) because I feel that each member has to be able to express themselves as well. I ask to be the director of what stays and what goes, however. I know that might be the hardest thing to reconcile about this, and why I feel like a douche for even having this idea. But I don't see any better option. The only way to be a perfect-commune-band is to develop telepathy, and until then someone has to be at least managing.

Secondly, if you're on board with what I had to say about the music, this is how I expect the band to operate.

We will not have to worry about practice space... For now. I have a lot of space until the end of this summer when my lease runs out. I assume that challenge will be met over time. The responsibilities I would ask are to be independently able to make time for practice and to commit to plans. I am really not unreasonable, and I understand things happen--but I ask for at least notice of these things. I do ask for people with reliable schedules. If your shifts at your job change every week or your girlfriend needs you at all times when you're not working or... well any bull sh*t like that I can't do. That's the way it is, and if you think about it, you know anything serious can't work like that. Of course, if it is something that can be planned on ahead of time, not a problem. The biggest thing is active communication and putting this sh*t as top recreational thought. That's the only way this thing can work. Just be reliable and not a douche, and planning practices, shows, recording sessions and the like should not be difficult.

Thirdly, the musicians I need:

Anything. This will be a rock band, make no mistake. I need drums, bass, and a guitarist or two. After that, if you have some other instrument we can mic, I would love to hear it. You should probably like bands like Brand New, Bright Eyes, The Killers, Fall Out Boy, or any band playing any variation of punk (as that's where my own roots are). Not necessarily a requirement, but it's really cool if you can draw people to shows. I have no doubts, if we keep serious about this, that we will find a following, but it's good to start with a base of possibly interested people.

Well, if you've actually bothered to read this essay and remained interested, contact me at toms.stern.eternal. Afterwords, we can trade numbers and names and so on. I can send you demos, but they are low quality and honestly, they will not give you a good perspective on how I sound. The only sure way to learn that is to just hear me play. Same goes for you. I promise you that this will be something very worth your while.
