ABOUT

I'm mainly a rock and rock n roll drummer. I play for the song, and not to show off technique. Very good listener, good ear; interested in song arrangements/song forms. I study privately, but I really don't have flashy chops. I do like all kinds of music - even if I can't play them proficiently - jazz (40s thru 70s, some contemporary), progressive rock, punk/new wave, singer-songwriter 1970s stuff, folk, country rock, Afro-Cuban, African drumming, traditional Irish music, etc. But always style over technique.

Some drummers I really like: Nigel Olsson (early Elton John, all time favorite), Ringo Starr, Jim Keltner (studio, George Harrison, Travelling Willburys), Steve Gadd (studio legend), Levon Helm (The Band), Jim Gordon (70s studio, Derek and The Dominoes), Aynsley Dunbar (studio, Bowie, Lou Reed), Philly Joe Jones (Miles Davis), Don Henley (The Eagles), Art Blakey (The Jazz Messengers), Mick Fleetwood, Joe Morello (Dave Brubeck) and Tony Williams (superhuman).
I'm not a fan of drumming as a sport, but I don't want to disparage those who play in that style. The super-drummers and you tube stars are impressive on some level, but ultimately leave me cold and unmoved. I like to play songs. And I can't really solo at all.
