I've been playing for years, almost entirely original material. I spent a few years in a great cover band, but decided to return to writing and performing original songs. I cover a lot of territory, but focus mostly on Alternative/Indie and Americana styles.
Think The Jayhawks, Pinegrove, Sun Kil Moon, Red House Painters, Son Volt, Matthew Sweet, Tommy Keene - mixed with influences like The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Killers, TTWS - you get the idea. Male or Female voice, I can do some backups. I have an electric upright bass, so can even dial it back to that level if so desired.
An interesting aside - my band 90 North were included in the Spin Magazine CD Sampler in 1993, with our song "Arkman". That was pretty cool! (Note: Song is in the list below)

Bassists: Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Mike Watt (Minutemen, Dos, Firehose), Bruce Foxton (The Jam), Graham Maby (Joe Jackson), Marc Perlman (The Jayhawks), Colin Moulding (XTC), Brian Baker and Steve Hansgen (Minor Threat), Dave Pegg and Ashley Hutchings (Fariport Convention), Simon Gallup (The Cure), Andy Rourke (The Smiths), and too many others to name.
Bands I wouldn't mind being compared to: The Jayhawks, Son Volt, Michael Penn, Ryan Adams, Matthew Sweet, Pinegrove....
I also love sad songs. Sun Kil Moon / Red House Painters / Mark Kozelek. Some songs by Tigers Jaw, Pinegrove, and many more. I also appreciate shoegaze/dreampop and a good deal of early Emo. The lyrics I write tend towards introspection, and many times sadness. It is like a pressure release valve, I suppose.
